Abstract

A study entitled “Insecticidal Activity of Leaves Ectract of Brotowali (Tinospora crispa L.) against larvae of Plutella xylostella L. on cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) ” was done under laboratory and field conditions. The study was carried out in order to know the active fraction of plant extract that responsible for insecticidal activity against P. xylostella larvae. Results of preliminary study, showed that from 100 plant extracts tested, the extract of Brotowali leaves indicated the strongest insecticidal activity against larvae of P. xylostella in vitro. Treatment with extract at concentration of 1% could reduce feeding activity about 44.29% and resulted in larvae mortality of P. xylostella at the rate of 13.33%. Fractination of crude extract through column chromatography and thin layer chromatography resulted in 14 fractions, in which only fraction V (eluted with ethyl acetate : hexan, 3 : 7) showed insecticidal activity against larvae of P. xylostella. This fraction contains two compounds with Rf value : 0.62 and 0.86 respectively. Significant corelations between concentration of either crude extract or fraction V and feeding activity of P. xylostella was shown with coeficien correlation (r2) 0.9585 and 0.9047 respectively. Effective concentration 50 (EC50) of crude extract and fraction V were 2.186% and 0.054% respectively. Aplication of crude extract on cabbage crop in the field at concentration of 0.1% - 1% reduced the population of P. xylostella from 55.47% to 84.63%; reduced the damage intensity of cabbage leaves from 33.62% to 64.78%; and reduced the yield losses from 185.53% to 361.61%.
