Abstract

Abstract This study aims to describe the role of semantic structure in explaining grammatical restrictions in Indonesian sentence, which has been relatively less attention. Restrictions in Indonesian sentences are much described by prescriptive logic as developed in the traditional linguistic flow, so that it appears illogical sentence votes. However, incoherence sentences are unsuccessful proved descriptively appropriate to linguistic epistemology. To fill the gap, based on the theory of structural linguistics, it is developed lexical semantic structure analysis to explain the incoherence of a sentence. To achieve these objectives the data were gathered from sources of written and oral, as well as intuitive data that is generated as a researcher is native speakers. Data were collected by observation methods with the note taking technique. Data were analyzed by the distributional method through expansion and deletion techniques. With such procedure it is revealed that the semantic structure of verbs and nouns could limit the extensions of sentence elements. Which expansions are accepted or rejected depend on the semantics features of verbs and nouns which become the core of the sentence. The testing procedure like this can give empirical reasons why a sentence structure is rejected or accepted. Empirical reasoning preclude linguists working prescriptively. Empirical reasoning can be implemented on teaching languages to increase understanding of grammatical semantics aspects. The grammatical restrictions that are tested with lexical semantic structure strengthen the study of linguistics as a descriptive science.
