Abstract

This research was based on a thought that local languages in Indonesia are those belong to language family which are rooted from proto Austronesia. This research was aimed at recognizing family level of local languages, particularly Malay, Javanese, Balinese, and Bima language. Family level of the four languages was analyzed using qualitative and quantitative approach. The qualitative approach was used to explain heritage type and sound change process from proto language, while the quantitative approach was used to estimate parting time from its parent language. In line with the case, there are two main theories used as basis in analyzing the theory; (1) sound change theory or sound correspondence or sound change role; and (2) lexicostatistics theory. The sound change theory was used to explain phonological process occurred from proto language to Malay, Javanese, Balinese, and Bima language. Lexicostatistics theory was used to count parting time and the language grouping. Pursuant to data analyzed qualitatively, it was concluded that those languages had undergone a number of processes: (1) monophthongization process; (2) proto phoneme partition; (3) apherasis; (4) syncope; (5) phoneme drop; and (6) merge. Based on quantitative approach, it was concluded that parting time of those local languages was different one another. In addition, those languages have two subgroups; (1) subgroup of Malay, Javanese, Balines, and (2) subgroup of Bima language which has its own subgroup. Moreover, based on lexicostatistics, it was also known that their family level was different.
