Abstract

Abstract The research focus was shifting of Balinese language vocabulary in the domain of agriculture and its impact on cultural preservation of dharma pamacul ‘the obligation of farmers’. This research was underlined by an empirical condition that there has been a change in the procedure of farmers in land processing. Such changes have an impact on vocabulary shift which leaded in an implication for the culture change. In particular, this study aimed at mapping the shift in Balinese lenguage vocabulary of agriculture domain and its relation to the dynamics of the local culture. To achieve these objectives, this study was undertaken based on the theory of anthropological linguistics and macrosemantics. This study was designed in a qualitative design. Data were collected through interviews method with farmers of subak sawah and abian in Tabanan and Buleleng. Informants were classified by sex and age group. Based on the research procedure, it revealed that there has been a shift in vocabulary and cultural aspects of agriculture in: equipment, cultural and societies, the process of land processing, plant maintenance and handling of crops. Vocabulary shift in the agricultural sphere resulted in the failure of children of farmers to understand the metaphor that is often used in the Balinese language discourse.
