Abstract

The article reveals the hegemony of Balinese custom and its resistance in Gde Aryantha Soethama’s short stories. The objects of the study were short stories collected in an anthology Mandi Api (2006). The research specifically aimed to reveal a number of problems related to the discourse of Balinese custom in Gde Aryantha Soethama’s short stories, namely (1) describing the representation of the hegemony of Balinese custom Gde Aryantha Soethama’s short stories; (2) describing the representation of resistance to Balinese custom Gde Aryantha Soethama’s short stories; (3) revealing the writer, Gde Aryantha Soethama’s view on the dynamics of Balinese custom as represented in his short stories. Applying sociological approach with Fairclough three dimensional model as the method of critical discourse analysis, the study was focused on three dimensions, namely texts (speech, visual imaging or the combination of the three), discourse practices which involve the production and consumption of text and social practices. The result of the study showed that Gde Aryantha Soethama’s short stories represented the hegemony and resistance in the dynamics of Balinese culture, including the hegemony of caste system, the hegemony of Balinese customary law and the hegemony of Balinese custom. The hegemony of Balinese custom brought out both strong and weak resistances. However, the resistance eventually strengthened the hegemony of Balinese custom. The representation of hegemony and resistance in the dynamics of Balinese culture reflected in Gde Aryantha Soethama’s short stories was the writer’s effort to invite the readers, especially the Balinese, to review the practices of Balinese custom and culture. keywords: hegemony, resistance, Balinese custom, short stories.
